— by Hannah Francis: A thick mass of starlings – 10,000-strong – hovers overhead like a dark storm cloud, the beating of each bird’s wings suspended mid-flight and distilled in time.
This stunning aerial installation at NGV International was created by Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang especially for this year’s Winter Masterpieces exhibition.
And it coincides with the return of the world-famous, ancient Terracotta Warriors, a few of which first visited the NGV in 1982 – their first destination outside China after their surprise discovery in 1974.
